Best of the West: Week 7

As the high school football season in North Carolina continues into Week 7, there are several big matchups with conference championship and playoff seeding implications on the line in the western part of the state.

Varina (VA) 4-1 at Grimsley (5-0)

Grimsley, North Carolina’s top ranked team will take on a Virginia powerhouse in Varina in Greensboro. Both teams are loaded with future college players and should be a great test for each team as they pursuit a state championship.

Independence 4-1 at West Charlotte 4-2

This is the biggest game in Charlotte this weekend as both teams are heading down the stretch to get the best seed for the upcoming playoffs. If you are in the Queen City, this is a much see game.

Swain County 3-2 at Robbinsville 4-2

One of the biggest games in Western North Carolina features two of the most tradition rich schools. It’s a Smoky Mountain 1A/2A clash that should be full of smash-mouth football. The Maroon Devils have been making some noise this year and the Black Knights are one of the favorites to win the 1A title.

South Point 4-1 at Crest 4-1

These two programs have had some historical battles in the past. Both schools have great tradition with multiple state titles. Can Crest stop the Red Raiders’ rushing attack to get the win?

Watauga 5-0 at Freedom 5-0

The Pioneers have been outstanding through the first 6 weeks of the season. Freedom is off to their best start in years. It’s a battle of the undefeated and should be a good one.

Maiden 5-1 at Hickory 5-1

Another great matchup between two great football programs. These two teams are having great seasons and will be major players in the state playoffs. A win for either team could boost them into a great seed.

East Wilkes 3-2 at Starmount 4-1

This game is a much anticipated matchup in Northwest North Carolina as two of the top contenders in Mountain Valley Conference and 2A class will battle it out. The winner will take a big step in state playoff seeding race.
