CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Myers Park Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season Friday night, falling 20-13 to the Mallard Creek Mavericks in a highly anticipated non-conference matchup between two teams expected to be in the mix for a state championship.

Coming into the game, Myers Park (3-1) was averaging 36.7 points per contest and looked poised to keep that offensive momentum going early. Quarterback Ramir Watson connected with Duke commit Brody Keefe for a touchdown on the Mustangs’ opening drive, setting the tone for what seemed like another explosive night. Myers Park followed that score with a field goal on its next possession, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead.

But Mallard Creek (3-1) responded with a physical, run-heavy attack led by quarterback Sam Cheeseboro and standout running back Xavier Edmond. In the second quarter, Edmond powered in from seven yards out to cut the deficit to 10-7.

Myers Park kicker James Remsen hit one of two field goal attempts before the half, sending the Mustangs into the locker room with a 13-7 advantage.

Despite trailing, Mallard Creek stayed committed to its ground game in the second half — a decision that proved to be the difference. Edmond found the end zone again in the third quarter on a one-yard run, giving the Mavericks their first lead of the night at 14-13.

Later in the quarter, Cheeseboro capped off another run-heavy drive with a two-yard touchdown. Although the extra point attempt failed, Mallard Creek extended its lead to 20-13, which held up as the final score.

Myers Park’s offense was stifled throughout the second half by a relentless Mavericks defense that allowed no points after halftime.

With the win, Mallard Creek improves to 3-1 on the season, while Myers Park also sits at 3-1 following the loss.
