Evan Simon’s stellar play in Temple’s 42-10, season-opening win at UMass has earned him American Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, the league announced Monday.

For some context, Simon became the first Temple player to win the American’s offensive player of the week award in seven seasons. Former Owls running back Ryquell Armstead, back in 2018, was the last Temple player to win the award.

Simon, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound redshirt senior, completed 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 248 yards and tied a single-game program record with six touchdown passes. He won the starting job out of preseason camp and played 50 of Temple’s 69 offensive snaps Saturday.

Simon said during Saturday’s postgame press conference that he took a measured approach to the field for the start of his sixth college season.

“I noticed something about myself today. I wasn’t so, like, amped up pregame and stuff,” Simon said. “Just really confident. I think that’s what it was, and just bringing others with, really.”

Simon and Temple will host Howard Saturday at 2 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in the Owls’ home opener. The Bison are coming off a 10-9 win this past Saturday over Florida A&M, where former Temple quarterback Henry Burris is the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
