Duquesne didn’t finish Stony Brook off as early as coach Dru Joyce III would have liked, but nonetheless, the Dukes still got back in the win column with an 84-75 triumph over Stony Brook Saturday afternoon.

It was John Hugley’s day for Duquesne (6-3).

The 6-foot-11 senior cracked 20 points for the fourth time in nine games as a Duke, ending with a game-high 25 to go with five rebounds.

It was a big bounce back both for Duquesne and Hugley in particular, who was held to two points— both on free throws— in 17 minutes during Tuesday’s home loss to William and Mary.

To top it all off, Hugley cracked 1,000 career points.

Jimmie Williams added 17 points for Duquesne, going 3-for-5 from 3-point land. Jakub Necas had 11 to go with eight rebounds.

Duquesne got off to a hot start, with Hugley making a pair of 3-pointers to make it 6-0.

But Duquesne scuffled after that, and Stony Brook took a 16-15 lead with 11:13 left in the first half.

After that, Duquesne took command, scoring 22 of the next 29 points to take a commanding 15-point lead. At halftime, Duquesne led 40-28, with Hugley leading the scoring with 14.

Stony Brook (6-3) wouldn’t go away in the second half, outscoring Duquesne 15-9 early on to cut the deficit to seven.

The deficit was six by the second media timeout, with Duquesne leading 55-49. By this point, Stony Brook’s Erik Pratt had reached double figures, with 10 points on the dot.

A similar theme followed for the next several minutes, with Duquesne holding a comfortable, but not insurmountable eight-point. By the four-minute mark, Duquesne had a 10-point lead and total control.

Duquesne plays again at Boise State Wednesday at 9.
