PITTSBURGH — Pitt starting left guard Keith Gouveia was carted off the field Saturday against Louisville with a grusome leg injury.

On Monday, Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi announced that Gouveia will officially miss the remainder of the season.

“Keith’s out for the year with a lower leg as you saw on game day,” Narduzzi said. “It’s disappointing. he’s a super kid. He’s a tough dude. It’s a tough loss, just like any one of your starters. We’ll regather, work the depth chart and see where we’ll go from there.”

After Gouveia exited the game against Louisville, redshirt sophomore Ryan Carretta stepped up in his place. On the Boston College week two-deep depth chart, Carretta was listed as the starter at left guard.

Carretta was primarily working as the backup center in practice, so that caused some movement elsewhere on the depth chart. Redshirt junior Jackson Brown is listed as Carretta’s backup at left guard.

Redshirt junior Isaiah Montgomery moves from the primary backup at right guard to the primary backup at center behind Lyndon Cooper. Redshirt sophomore Tai Ray is now the top backup at right guard.

“Carretta’s played center, he’s played guard and I just think he’s the best guy. He’s one of the best five guys to put in there. We’ve got guys behind him. Isaiah Montgomery will be ready, Tai Ray will be ready and Jackson Brown will be ready. We got three other guys that have played football for us,” Narduzzi said.

With Gouveia, a redshirt senior, only playing in four games before his injury, he could apply for a medical waiver and an extra year of eligibility.

Gouveia transferred to Pitt out of Richmond, where he played in 33 career games with 24 starts. He secured the starting left guard position during training camp and started all four games for the Panthers there so far this season.
