Recap of Hopewell's 6th Grade Results in New Castle Travel Tournament
The Hopewell Vikings 6th Grade Girls Travel Basketball team was in action this morning as they took place in a tournament in New Castle.
Aside from winning a medal or trophy for reaching the championship game, this 2-day event had an extra prize- the top teams would qualify for a national tournament which would be played at Penn State University.
The eight-team field includes Beaver, Neshannock, Sharon, Plum, Boardman, Canfield and Ellwood City.
Bright and early this morning, the Lady Vikings had back-to-back games taking on teams from Neshannock and Boardman.
Despite being in both games, Hopewell started the tournament 0-2.
In the first game against Neshannock, Hopewell held a 14-12 lead before Neshannock went on a 12-0 run which was the turning point in this game as Neshannock went on to win 33-22.
The closest that Hopewell could get within Neshannock was 5 points, when Davis made a free throw to cut the deficit to 26-21.
Rilynn Davis led Hopewell with 8 points, followed by Lydia Jaquay with 6, Talia Santia with 4 points, Nevaeh Pope with 2 points and Gia Yurcina with 2 points.
In the second contest, Boardman took an early 8-1 lead and Hopewell couldn’t get much closer as they lost 25-15.
Davis connected on a 3-pointer to get Hopewell within 8-5 and after Jaquay’s basket, Hopewell trailed just 10-7.
Navaeh Pope led the Vikings with 5 points followed by Lydia Jaquay with 4, Rilynn Davis with 4 and Isla Rock with 2 points.
One thing that Vikings Sports Now wanted to mention is that in both games and really all season, the defense played by Talia Santia has been elite as has been her play at point guard distributing the ball to her teammates. Hopewell’s offensive has been above average all season and a big reason for that has been the play and ball distribution of Santia. Great job Talia!
The Vikings will be back in action tomorrow in Day 2 of this tournament.
