Surprise, 4-Star Matt Sieg Signs with West Virginia
In a surprise to many, Fort Cherry 4-star safety Matt Sieg signed this morning with the West Virginia Mountaineers.
It was surprising in the sense that everyone in the local and national media had Sieg signing with either Virginia Tech or Pitt but that didn’t turn out to be the case.
Since opening up his recruitment, Sieg took official visits to Indiana, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Pitt.
Notre Dame was considered an option because of the opportunity to win plus the Notre Dame education. The recent success of the Hoosiers program under Curt Cignetti made them an attractive option. Once James Franklin was hired, Virginia Tech became a serious option and the place many thought he’d land. Pat Narduzzi and Pitt made a full-court press to land Sieg and tempted him with their defensive scheme, success in getting players to the NFL, early playing time and the education but that wasn’t enough.
But in the end, West Virginia was the choice for Sieg. Interesting.
In his announcement, Sieg listed location to home and ability to play on both sides of the ball as reasons for choosing Rich Rodriguez and the Mountaineers.
