UConn Football Kicker Chris Freeman Named to Lou Groza Award Watch List

UConn Football kicker Chris Freeman was one of 30 players named to the 2025 Lou Groza Award Preseason watch list on Friday afternoon.
The award is named after Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker Lou Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. During his time in the NFL, Groza racked up many accomplishments such as the 1954 Sporting NewsNFL MVP, nine Pro Bowl selections, and to top it all off, won four Super Bowls as well. .
Freeman joined the Huskies roster last offseason following four years with the University of Indiana, where he was mostly used as a kickoff specialist up until the 2023 season, where he was the Hoosiers main placekicker. During his lone year as the primary placekicker, Freeman went 10-of-14 (71.4%) on field goals and 29-of-30 on extra points.
Once he arrived in Storrs, that’s when Freeman was really able to show off what he could with his leg. During the 2024 season, Freeman went 20-of-26 (76.9%) on field goal attempts, with a long of 53 yards. On top of that, he also made all 49 of his extra points and ended the year with 109 points, which was good for the third most in program history.
The Lou Groza Award first started back in 1992 and no UConn Football player has ever won the award.
