Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton totaled five touchdowns and threw only five incompletions in Saturday’s 35-10 win over Texas. This season, he’s thrown for 2,269 yards and 19 touchdowns while tossing only three interceptions. Stockton has eight rushing touchdowns, displaying his versatility at the quarterback position.

He’s led Georgia to a 9-1 record and has faced a murderer’s row worth of opponents. Stockton has directed the Bulldogs to four wins when facing second-half deficits — three of those occurring while trailing in the fourth quarter.

Stockton plays his best in big games, with the Bulldogs facing the nation’s 12th-ranked strength of schedule, according to ESPN’s FPI. When Stockton makes mistakes, such as an interception that led to a touchdown against Texas, he bounces back in big ways, such as leading Georgia’s offense to 21 unanswered points.

The sportsbooks are paying some attention, with BetMGM ranking Stockton fifth in the Heisman race at +2500. Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza (-115), Ohio State’s Julian Sayin (+225), Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed (+500) and Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia (+2200) are slotted ahead of Stockton. At this time, Stockton is still considered a long shot with the odds Mendoza, Sayin and Reed are getting.

Should that be the case though? Indiana has the nation’s 38th-ranked strength of schedule and Ohio State’s is 50th. While Indiana beat Oregon and Ohio State defeated Texas, it’s certainly easier to face the likes of Iowa, Illinois, Penn State and Wisconsin than Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas.

Something tells me Stockton isn’t concerned with any Heisman hype and would prefer to focus on delivering Georgia its third national title in five seasons.

But if Stockton performs the way he has over the next two games, he should receive an invitation to New York for the Heisman ceremony. Stockton has more than proven he’s among college football’s best players this season.
