2026 defensive back Vincent Smith finds home at West Virginia

Orland Park (Il.) Sandburg 2026 defensive back Vincent Smith took his official visit to West Virginia in early June, not knowing what to expect.
But from that point forward the Mountaineers moved to the forefront of his recruitment and eventually led to his commitment to the Big 12 Conference football program.
“West Virginia jumped to one after the visit,” he said.
Smith, 6-foot-2, 200-pounds, picked West Virginia over offers from USC, Iowa, Purdue, Kentucky, Iowa State and a number of other schools.
“I let them know recently and they were very excited to hear the great news. They said I was the No. 1 cornerback on their board,” he said.
The Rivals three-star prospect was impressed with the plan that the coaching staff laid out for him in the secondary, where he could be utilized at various positions.
“Being used all over the secondary,” he said.
Smith developed a strong connection with cornerbacks coach Rod West and that was critical throughout the course of the process. That started when West came out to see him and his trainer during the evaluation period.
“We shared a lot in common and clicked from the start,” he said.
Smith is excited to have his recruitment behind him and now will focus on his senior season and preparing to enroll at West Virginia in the summer.
“I’m very excited about that,” he said.
