A deep dive into the WVU vs. Ohio football series

It’s been a while since West Virginia and Ohio met on the football field, but the two programs have plenty of history. The Mountaineers have held the upper hand in the series, especially in recent decades.
A Glimpse Through the Years
The West Virginia vs. Ohio series began on November 5, 1897, when the Mountaineers suffered a 12-0 loss in Athens. Since then, the teams have met 16 times, with the most recent matchup taking place on September 8, 2001.
Overall Series Record – WVU 13, Ohio 4
West Virginia has won 13 times against the Bobcats, while Ohio has come away with 4 victories.
Streaks
The Mountaineers enter the 2025 game on a 4-game winning streak in the series, dating back to 1983. Their longest win streak is 6 games, running from 1907 to 1934. Ohio’s longest win streak was just one game, last accomplished in 1949.
Margin of Victory
WVU’s largest margin of victory came in 1983, a 55-3 win in Morgantown. The smallest winning margin was a 3-0 victory in 1911. The Bobcats’ most lopsided win was the 14-0 shutout in 1945. The average score is 19.2 to 4.4 in favor of the Mountaineers.
Recent History
In the last 10 matchups between the two programs, West Virginia holds an 8-2 edge, with the most recent win a 20-3 result in 2001. Ohio’s last win came back in 1949, making this a series the Mountaineers have largely controlled in the modern era.
Location Advantage
Home field has been a clear edge for West Virginia. The Mountaineers are 11-2 in Morgantown against Ohio and have not lost at home since 1945. However, two of WVU’s four losses in the series have come in Athens. The Mountaineers hold a 2-0 record in the two neutral games the teams have played, both held in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
