West Virginia and TCU don’t have a century-long rivalry, but since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12, the two programs have developed a consistently competitive series. The Mountaineers will host TCU this weekend in Morgantown, looking to build on their narrow win from two seasons ago.

A Glimpse Through the Years

The series began on Dec. 31, 1984, when West Virginia defeated TCU 31-14 in the Bluebonnet Bowl. The two teams have met 13 times, with the most recent matchup coming on Sept. 30, 2023, when the Mountaineers edged the Horned Frogs 24-21 in Fort Worth.

Overall Series Record – WVU 8, TCU 5
West Virginia leads the all-time series 8-5, including a 7-5 mark in Big 12 play.

Streaks

The Mountaineers enter this year’s contest riding a one-game win streak following the 2023 24-21 road win. Their longest run of success came between 2016 and 2021 when WVU won five of six matchups.

Margin of Victory

West Virginia’s largest margin of victory came in 2018, when the Mountaineers dominated 47-10 in Morgantown. Their smallest margin was last season’s three-point win in Fort Worth. The tight nature of several matchups, with seven decided by 10 points or fewer, reflects how close this series has been over the years.

West Virginia has scored 372 total points, while averaging 29 points per game in the series.

Recent History

West Virginia has won six of the last ten meetings dating back to 2014, including four of the last six. During that stretch, every matchup has carried Big 12 implications, and both teams have had moments of momentum swings that kept the series even and unpredictable.

Location Advantage

The series has been remarkably balanced by location. West Virginia holds a 3-3 record at home and a 4-2 record in Fort Worth, showing that neither team has dominated on its own turf. The lone neutral-site game came in 1984, a WVU bowl win in Houston.
