Comfort level leads SirPaul Cheeks to West Virginia
For Chesterfield (Va.) Varina 2026 running back SirPaul Cheeks, his college decision came down to comfort level and West Virginia certainly provided that.
Cheeks, 5-foot-9, 185-pounds, received a scholarship offer from the Mountaineers in February and was able to develop a close connection with running backs coach Larry Porter during that time. That was only reinforced when Porter visited him and when he made visits to Morgantown.
That includes his official visit to campus June 13-15.
“They showed the most love and I feel the most comfortable there,” he said.
And naturally, the West Virginia coaching staff was excited when Cheeks let them know about his plans to pick them as his college destination over a number of other Power Four scholarship offers including Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Pittsburgh and Minnesota.
“They were so hype when I committed,” he said.
The Rivals three-star prospect is coming off a season where he had almost 1,500 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns, showcasing the ability to make an impact as both a runner and a pass catcher.
That versatility is something that was not only attractive to the coaching staff but to Cheeks as he would be able to help in a number of spots within the offense.
Cheeks plans to enroll in the summer and now plans to enjoy the rest of his senior season without any pressure of needing to sort through his recruitment.
“I feel like all the weight is off my shoulders,” he said.
