West Virginia sophomore linebacker Curtis Jones has started to carve out a role on the defense.

Jones has played both bandit and nickel for the Mountaineers and he credits the coaching staff for preparing him to be in position to do that.

“They all have done a great job helping me navigate where I’m supposed to go, especially playing multiple positions at the same time,” he said. “For me, I’m a football player. I’ve been playing this game since I was five years old. I’m just happy to be on the field.”

Jones finished the game against UCF with 4 tackles and 2 pass breakups and made several plays that stood out. That was largely due to the work he did with Nickels coach Henry Weinreich.

“Just film study, taking the right angle,” he said.

It’s a significant jump for the in-state native after he primarily played special teams in his first season. But it hasn’t been as big of an adjustment as you would expect.

“It’s a lot more mental aspect that’s involved at this level,” he said.

The Mountaineers struggled at times on defense against UCF, but Jones believes that it boiled down to communication and even he was guilty of some missed assignments.

“I have to get back in the film room,” he said.

The focus now is to get back to what they do well and not let negative play affect the defense or define the entire game as well as embracing his role on the unit.
