Former West Virginia star JJ Wetherholt continues to move quickly through pro ball. The St. Louis Cardinals have promoted Wetherholt to Triple-A Memphis after just 62 games in Double-A.

Wetherholt slashed .300/.425/.466 with 22 extra-base hits, 34 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases for Springfield, leading the Texas League in both on-base percentage and OPS. He also had seven home runs, including a two-homer game right before his promotion.

He becomes the first Cardinals minor leaguer to reach Triple-A or higher within a year of being drafted since pitcher Michael Wacha in 2013, and the first position player to do it since Brett Wallace in 2009.

The former WVU infielder was the Big 12 Player of the Year and the nation’s batting champ in 2023, and after playing part of the 2024 season, he went seventh overall to St. Louis in last summer’s MLB Draft, the highest pick in Mountaineer history.

Wetherholt is also set to appear in the MLB Futures Game on July 12 in Atlanta. He’ll join Memphis ahead of its series starting July 8 against Charlotte.

A call-up to St. Louis later this season is definitely in play, though 2026 might still be the safer bet. Either way, the Mountaineers have another name climbing the ladder fast.
