The LSU Tigers take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in game 1 of the 2025 NCAA Div 1 Super Regional Baseball Championship at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA. Saturday, June 7, 2025.

West Virginia pitcher Griffin Kirn was taken in the 14th round of the 2025 MLB Draft, being selected by the Athletics.

Kirn spent just one season with West Virginia, but it was a memorable one. Kirn was the ace for the Mountaineers, starting 17 games and appearing in 18. Kirn tossed a total of 99.0 innings, with a 3.36 ERA on the season. Kirn tallied 103 strikeouts on the season, as he went 5-3, while WVU won 12 of the 18 games he pitched in.

Kirn came to West Virginia from Quincy University (DII) this past season, earning First Team All-Big 12 Honors, while also being named an NCBWA Third Team All-American.

A lot of Kirn’s success this past season came on his ability to command the strike zone. Kirn issued only 30 walks this past season, walking only 13 batters over his last 11 appearances of the season.

In addition to being able to command the zone, Kirn was able to be relied upon to go deep into ballgames. This season, Kirn threw 90 or more pitches nine different times.

Kirn was a force in WVU’s Clemson Regional victory, getting the start on WVU’s 4-3 win in game one, before closing out the regional with an inning out of the bullpen in game three.

Kirn is the second West Virginia pitcher who came to WVU from the Division II level to be drafted in as many seasons, joining Derek Clark from last season, who was taken in the 9th round of the MLB Draft.
