West Virginia pitcher Jack Kartsonas was picked up following the draft on a contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

It was quite the year for Kartsonas, who entered WVU last summer knowing he was rehabbing an injury. Flash forward, after being held back at the start of the season, Kartsonas worked his way into being WVU’s second starter on the weekends.

Kartsonas tossed 66.1 innings this year, with a 3.66 ERA; however, he did not start games until mid-April. In total, Kartsonas started nine games while appearing in 20 this past season.

Kartsonas is certainly not going to light up a radar gun, but his experience and ability to get outs was what WVU needed from him this past season. He walked 20 batters all season, while he had 77 total strikeouts.

Kartsonas held opponents to a .245 batting average against, while he allowed only eight home runs.

This past year, Kartsonas was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and the ABCA All-East Region Second Team as well.

This was his only season at WVU, after he spent three seasons at Kent State and then one season at John Carroll. Despite the three seasons spent at Kent State, he appeared in only 35 games, missing 2022 with an injury, and then making 15 total starts.

Kartsonas is a native of Pittsburgh, representing USA in the 2019 18U World Series.
