Javon Small closes strong in NBA Summer League

Javon Small made the most of his final shot.
After missing several Summer League games, Small was inserted into the Grizzlies’ starting lineup Thursday and led the team with 17 points in a 92-88 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
The former West Virginia guard hit 5-of-12 shots from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. He added five rebounds and five assists in what was by far his most complete performance of the summer.
Small signed a two-way contract with Memphis earlier this week and will now look to make the most of his opportunity, splitting time between the Grizzlies and their G League affiliate.
He became the second Mountaineer selected in the NBA Draft in the last four years, joining Miles “Deuce” McBride, who was taken in the second round in 2021. Jevon Carter was selected in the second round back in 2018.
Small averaged 18.6 points and earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors in his lone season at West Virginia, helping lead the Mountaineers to a 19–12 record.
While Small didn’t have a lot of time on the floor during the Summer League, he finished strong and with a contract in hand, that’s what matters most.
