Khalil Wilkins competes hard in most extended action at QB
West Virginia redshirt freshman quarterback Khalil Wilkins saw the most extended action of his young college career against Utah and seemed to respond to the moment.
Wilkins took over in the second half and led the Mountaineers on their three most successful drives of the game traveling 75-yards, 51-yards and 75-more yards.
Those three possessions resulted in the only points of the game for West Virginia scoring a pair of touchdowns and having another negated due to a pass interference penalty on what would have been a third score.
The young signal caller provided a boost for the offense after the Mountaineers mustered just 95-yards at halftime and no points with redshirt senior Jaylen Henderson under center.
“I think he competed well for a young guy. He’s getting his first action and thought he ran hard,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said.
Wilkins completed 3-6 passes for 63 yards and a touchdown in the passing game, while rushing for another 39 on 9 attempts while showing an ability to handle that aspect in the offense.
It was far from a perfect effort as Wilkins missed on some opportunities in the passing game but it still was an encouraging effort even in a lopsided affair.
“A couple of throws he probably would like to have back. We missed a couple easy ones there but I was proud of the way he competed,” Rodriguez said.
It remains to be seen what will happen next in the quarterback race which has played multiple options in every game this season and was without the starter of the first four games Nicco Marchiol but Wilkins certainly made a strong impression in his time on the field.
