West Virginia opened the season with a 45-3 convincing win over Robert Morris and WVSports.com provides some observations from what unfolded. –This game sort of is what it was as West Virginia overcame a sluggish first half which featured fumbles on three consecutive possessions to score 35 unanswered and pitch a shut out in the second half. The Mountaineers rolled up 625 yards and 393 rushing in this game while averaging 8.2 yards per play. The defense held Robert Morris to 123 total yards and 53 rushing yards on 37 attempts (1.4 per carry). The Mountaineers also forced two turnovers and eight three and outs. Clearly, West Virginia has to clean up the turnovers and penalties were an issue at times as well with 9 for 69, but in the end this team did what it needed to do and bounced back from a difficult first half to win going away against an FCS team. That is exactly what you expect in a game with so much change across the board and while it wasn’t how many wanted to see it unfold, the end result is the same.
