One transfer portal window target of college coaches
It appears that college football is moving ever closer to one transfer portal period and the majority of college coaches, including West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez could very well be happy.
A committee of power conference football administrators and athletic directors is expected to make a formal recommendation on the portal soon and that is expected to be for one singular period in January. That has been the push from the majority of college coaches, including Rodriguez.
“At least then, you have an idea what your roster is,” Rodriguez explained during the spring.
The only major pushback has been from the Big 10 but the league isn’t suggesting more than one portal instea,d that portal be placed in April to avoid it unfolding during bowl season.
But with seemingly the rest of college football pushing for the January window, that seems to be the likely outcome at this stage.
The reasoning for the current push to one January window is rather obvious for many involved.
It would not only help preserve the current bowl season, where several teams were affected by the number of available players on their roster but provide some guardrails to a system that has become difficult for college coaches to navigate or control.
Under the current system, there are two separate windows to transfer with one in the winter and then the spring, which has made it difficult for coaches to even understand what they have on their rosters.
The fear of poaching has become so great that teams have even gone as far to limit or completely cancel their spring games to avoid showing too much to other coaching staffs.
