QB competition features exciting young options

West Virginia has some experience in the ongoing quarterback competition, but some young options that are exciting, too.
True freshman Scotty Fox and redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins are both competing in the five-man derby at the position and both have impressed at times.
Fox enrolled at West Virginia in the spring and while true freshmen normally hold onto the ball a little too long, with him, it’s almost the opposite at times.
“He’s almost going too fast. Which is a good thing, but he has great footwork, great mechanics and he makes some throws and makes some decisions that you wouldn’t anticipate out of a freshman,” quarterbacks coach Rhett Rodriguez said.
Fox finished his senior season with 2,759 passing yards and 34 touchdowns, while rushing for 321 yards and 7 scores on the ground. And while there is a learning curve, Fox has certainly made the most of his opportunities.
“He’s been really impressive,” he said.
Wilkins spent a season with the Mountaineers under the previous coaching staff but missed reps during the spring with the new coaches due to an injury. Still, he has continued to improve in practice.
“As he gets more and more reps he’ll keep getting better,” Rodriguez said. “Obviously dynamic with the ball in his hands. He’s broken off a few big runs already. And so really excited about his future.”
And while it remains to be seen where each of these options will stack up in the competition, there is reason to be excited about what they bring to the table.
