Redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins set to make first career start for West Virginia

West Virginia will start Khalil Wilkins at quarterback tonight when the Mountaineers take on BYU. The redshirt freshman steps into the role in his second season with the program, marking his first career start on one of the bigger stages of the year.
Wilkins, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound dual-threat from Washington, D.C., has appeared in three games this fall. He has rushed for 106 yards on 16 carries, including a long of 22, and completed 3-of-6 passes for 63 yards with one touchdown. His athleticism and ability to create outside the pocket have provided a spark when given the chance.
Before arriving in Morgantown, Wilkins built a strong high school résumé across multiple programs. He played at Theodore Roosevelt, Wise, and Riverdale Baptist, where he collected two state championships, two MVP honors, and was selected for the 2023 Under Armour All-American Combine. He threw for over 4,200 yards and accounted for nearly 50 total touchdowns in high school, drawing three-star ratings from Rivals, On3, and ESPN.
The coaching staff has consistently praised his development since redshirting in 2024, pointing to his growth in decision-making and comfort in the offense. His first opportunity to lead the Mountaineers will come in a critical Big 12 matchup against BYU, a defense known for its physicality and discipline.
Wilkins’ start provides a glimpse at the future of the quarterback position for West Virginia while also presenting a challenge that could define the trajectory of the season.
