West Virginia operated in full pads Tuesday and head coach Rich Rodriguez believed that his team certainly made steps toward getting better ahead of the season.

But there’s still more things to accomplish.

The Mountaineers had around 25-minutes live in the session focused mostly on situational aspects such as the end of the game and end of the half.

But that’s not to say there weren’t teachable moments as there were once again issues with self-inflicted penalties such as a pair of procedural issues and two more holding penalties. The quarterbacks also threw a pair of interceptions and while those weren’t bad throws, they were bad decisions based on what the coaching staff demands out of the position.

That isn’t out of the ordinary for signal callers news in the offense because often the natural thing is to drop back in coverage and look at your own guys which is fine in man, but in zone the key is to trust where players will be and have your eyes in the right spots.

That’s because so much of the quarterback’s decision-making is based on if his eyes are in the right spot. The quarterback is constantly getting information before, at and after the snap and it’s all happening very quickly especially when using tempo.

“So you really got to process things quickly and be really comfortable with that,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez felt that the push up front might have been incrementally better Tuesday, but running backs need to hit the hole and not be hesitant.

“I think there’s a trust factor in running certain plays and hitting the holes as fast as we would like,” he said.

The install process has been intentionally slower in the fall with so many new guys on the roster but the plan is to be honing in on a couple things that they have to have in place while removing some others that the coaches don’t believe they need.

The plan will be to be in shorts Wednesday before returning to full pads Thursday. The program will then have another long scrimmage Saturday inside the stadium.

“And then try to get some semblance of a depth chart after that,” Rodriguez said.
