Rich Rodriguez believes QB room equipped with willing runners

West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez wants his quarterbacks to be willing runners.
But there’s a lot of different ways to go about accomplishing that. Of course, the faster and more dynamic a quarterback is the more they are a threat at the position for obvious reasons.
“The faster the guy is, the more dynamic you’re going to get in the run game,” he said.
Those types of quarterbacks have had plenty of success under Rodriguez in the past such as Pat White, Rasheed Marshall or Denard Robinson.
But he’s also had success with different styles of runners such as Tyler Huff last season who rushed for 1,344 yards and 15 touchdowns despite being more of a physical option.
“He ran pretty well, but I mean he made you tackle him. He was a big, strong physical guy that had a little bit of short area quickness,” Rodriguez said.
So, that’s proof that while being fast helps you don’t have to be in the mold of White to have success but you do need to have some understanding on how to run effectively.
“Be a guy that sees the space and gets the space and understands the running part of it,” he said.
The good news is that Rodriguez likes where his quarterback options are in that department in terms of running the football and all of them are equipped to handle that role in the offense.
All five of the quarterbacks competing for the job can move and handle what is being asked of them which has been evident when Rodriguez has allowed them to go live in practice.
“They all run well enough to run,” Rodriguez said.
