West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez has five quarterbacks preparing for the upcoming season, and he offered a detailed breakdown of each during his weekly radio show.

Nicco Marchiol (redshirt junior)

“Nicco has got the most experience. Him and Jaylen Henderson both have the most experience. He’s played Power Four football. You can see it. He has a feel for the game a little bit. He understands a lot of things quicker because he’s been around. He’s got good arm strength. He’s a bigger guy, but he’ll run. He’s a willing runner. He may not be fast, but he’s got some athletic ability and can run.”

Jaylen Henderson (redshirt senior)

“Jaylen’s kind of the same way. He’s got some experience. He’s got some moxie about him. He can understand that. He can make all the throws. He’s another good athlete that can run. He’s a willing runner, and that’s a good thing for him. He’s still learning a little bit as well, but I’ve seen him get better and better, more comfortable.”

Max Brown (redshirt junior)

“Max Brown might be the best athlete of all of them. He’s got some experience playing at Charlotte. He was at Florida initially. He’s a big, strong guy. He’s got tremendous arm strength. He’s still learning, again, the system as well, and he’s set back a little bit. He was sick for a few days last week, but he’s a talented guy.”

Scotty Fox (freshman)

“Scotty’s got one of the quickest releases of any quarterback I’ve ever had. Ever had. He’s got a great release, great size, can run, and has really been impressive.”

Khalil Wilkins (redshirt freshman)

“Khalil Wilkins, Khalil missed the first part of camp, and he still overcome from a shoulder injury, and so that put him down a little bit, but he’s the fastest of them, can really run. He’s a great young man. He’s eager to learn, and so he’s really come on in the last couple of weeks as well.”

Others in the mix

Rodriguez added that younger quarterbacks Scott Keane and Max Anderson are also progressing, though the main competition centers around the five names above.

The bottom line

“We’ve got five guys that, Rhett and myself, we’re trying to juggle and have these guys ready to play. Normally, you try to get two ready to play, maybe three. You hope you have three. All five of these guys are getting reps now, all five of them, so it’s been a fun thing to do, and the competition’s been really good.”
