Rich Rodriguez looks for routine not rut in early fall camp

West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez wants to get into a routine but not into a rut when it comes to practice.
That means establishing a clear path, as there are certain drills that can be done each day that are relevant to what is needed on both sides of the ball, but other stuff still must be accomplished.
That’s the focus of Rodriguez.
“You don’t want to get into a rut and not be able to practice other stuff you want to do,” he said.
The opportunity to work with players in the summer helps acclimate some of the newcomers to what to expect in the fall but even then there are a significant number of newcomers on the roster. Still, Rodriguez felt that his team did a good job of grasping the schematic part of things.
West Virginia will do five days of installation on the offensive side of the ball and the Mountaineers have already mapped out what they will do during each of those days.
“That is a little ambitious but we’ll do one through five and I’ll go back and do one through five again,” Rodriguez said.
The coaching staff isn’t anywhere close to a game plan yet, but are currently working on putting in particular plays offensively that will carry over from week to week.
“And doing drills no matter what the play is,” Rodriguez said. “Those are drills we have to do every day but we also add.”
