Rich Rodriguez press conference summary: 8-5
West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez addressed the media at a press conference and WVSports.com provides a summary of what was said.
–Rodriguez said that they finished the first day in pads and today was the first live. It wasn’t a whole lot different than the past couple days other than the live period. They didn’t have quarterbacks live today but they will likely do that Thursday.
–Rodriguez wants his team to be physical and sometimes they won’t even know they’re being soft. He still likes the guys and the team and tomorrow they will be in shorts but Thursday when they go full pads it will improve a notch. And Saturday is when they will scrimmage which will be important.
–You almost have to overemphasize things so players understand it. Rodriguez has to make a point out of things so everybody has to understand it. If you run the wrong route because you’re lazy that is a different type of dynamic.
–Most of the things Rodriguez gets upset about is when players take the easy route out. He thinks his players are very conscientious and they will be a little more physical up front and tune to the details.
–Part of his discussions with the offensive staff will be to make sure they have enough plays to have success but they need to be able to run those really good and branch out from there.
–Rodriguez said that his players work hard and have a great training staff but it’s common place for guys to think more about other stuff than football when there should be nothing else on their minds during camp.
–Rodriguez is an advocate for the kids and the stuff they’re doing for them but he does think part of his responsibility is to teach their guys to get up and put a great days work in and have a sense of appreciation for their opportunity and work really hard to make the most of it.
–Rodriguez said that Pat McAfee earned his success and he works really hard.
–The first year is always the hardest. It will prove to him that they’ve got it when he doesn’t have to yell or run them after practice. People say he likes to yell, no he likes to win.
–Rodriguez said he doesn’t feel better about anything. He likes his team but he doesn’t like where they’re at. He has a little frustration but some optimism but that is likely how he always feels.
–Rodriguez said that they are looking to add players still perhaps at running back, offensive line or any spots they don’t feel good about depth. When they’re here, they’re here that’s when you know that they’ve added some players but it’s hard given the timing right now.
