West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez understands the challenges across the landscape of the Big 12 Conference at the quarterback position.

The league boasts nine different signal callers that threw for at least 2,400 yards last season which is almost more than the 11 in the other power four leagues combined.

“I think it’s the best collection of returning quarterbacks in the country by conference,” he said.

However, even with no declared starter for his own football team and a competition that is expected to continue well into fall camp – Rodriguez is confident in what he has in the room.

It’s the same stance that Rodriguez has held since the spring as he has gotten more familiar with the players that make up his quarterback room. But during Big 12 Media Days, Rodriguez said that the quarterback room is the one that he is least worried about from an athletic and talent standpoint.

“I like our quarterback room. There’s a lot of positions I have some unknowns and there’s a little bit of unknown in our quarterback room,” Rodriguez said. “But there’s four or five guys that we feel have the talent to have success in our quarterback room.”

Rodriguez has some experience in the room with redshirt junior Nicco Marchiol returning and having started multiple games over his time in Morgantown, along with redshirt senior Jaylen Henderson who started at Texas A&M and redshirt junior Max Brown who has experience at multiple stops.

There also are young options such as redshirt freshman Khalil Wilkins and true freshman Scotty Fox.

“So it’s going to be an interesting competition. We have a couple guys that have played some football, I’m really excited about that. And we have a couple of young guys that have some great futures,” he said.

Strong quarterback play is a must for success and Rodriguez believes his group is equipped for the task. Now, it’s about trying to figure out how the pieces fit together.

“I’m hoping I have three I can win with. I think we do. If I have two I think we can win with, I’ll play both of them. If we have three, I’ll play all three of them,” he said. “But I have a good quarterback room I think.”
