Rich Rodriguez has discussed the transfer portal in fall camp.

West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez has held two press conferences since the start of fall camp and in both he’s discussed the topic of the transfer portal.

The Mountaineers were very active in the transfer portal filling out the roster in both the winter and post spring ball with around 50 new additions from the database.

But that hasn’t stopped him from bringing up the topic of potentially exploring for more additions.

“There’s still 4,000 kids in the portal, isn’t there? I got a recruiting staff. I mean, I got a big old recruiting staff. They do a really nice job. They’re in, they’re still looking. We’re still looking. We ain’t got a game. School don’t start for a couple weeks. I have a spot or two open. I’m just saying,” Rodriguez said.

The topic first came up when discussing the wide receivers on the first day of fall camp when he said that half of the players cramped and they weren’t used to the volume.

“The portal’s still open, right? If we need-I mean if you’re in the portal now you’re probably pretty desperate, right? You’re probably like, ah, well, you know there might be some good ones still out there. I don’t know,” he said. “I like our group of wideouts, but I think the volume of a first practice was a little bit of a shock to some of them.”

Rodriguez then mentioned the database again when he brought up that only two running backs finished the second practice without tapping out. After being asked about it, he elaborated with this.

“I got good running backs here. I got a good group. But we finished with two. So, you think I’m not going to talk to my recruiting staff this afternoon? We’re running a business. It helps to have some running backs,” Rodriguez said.
