The West Virginia football team donned full pads Thursday and had around 20 minutes of live action, according to head coach Rich Rodriguez.

And with that was some good and bad.

“Thought the defense got a little better today, not sure the offense took a lot of steps,” Rodriguez said.

The defense appeared to have a pretty good grasp of what the coaching staff has put in so far and was active on the practice field. The offensive side of the ball didn’t come off the ball and some of that can be boiled down to the quarterback spot.

“Weren’t being vocal enough. I’m standing behind them and I can barely hear the cadence. When you don’t come off the ball the way you’re supposed to it can be a multitude of things and that was just one was we’re not verbalizing our get off the ball time enough,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said that on offense, there were instances of players making mental mistakes on the same plays that they’ve been running for four or five days and that is a signal that he and the coaching staff need to coach them better.

“We’re all going to make mistakes every day. Let’s not make the same mistakes every day and that’s the frustrating part,” Rodriguez said.

That doesn’t mean that the defense is ahead of the offense at this stage, simply that they were more aggressive off the ball. There is not the same intensity level in individual periods that carries over to the team period, which was what Rodriguez was trying to point out to his team.

Rodriguez wants his group to not only operate fast, but with game-like intensity at all times, which continues to be a work in progress at this stage of camp.

“You have to have a sense of urgency,” he said.

When asked if he learned anything about the quarterbacks outside of the issues with cadence, Rodriguez said that even if he did know anything about a depth chart, he wouldn’t be telling.
