Rich Rodriguez trusting the process

This certainly isn’t the first rodeo for West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez.
And that obviously gives him some confidence when it comes to correcting some of the inconsistencies that his football team has dealt with in the first four weeks.
The Mountaineers upended Pittsburgh on a 10-point fourth quarter rally to win the game in overtime but struggled on the road at Kansas in a 41-10 defeat. Part of that comes with the territory in the first year over top of a program especially when you throw in almost 80 new players on the roster.
“I know what I’m doing. It’s just painful. It’s painful for us to watch. It’s painful for our fans to watch. It’s painful for everybody that loves our program but the stuff will get right hopefully sooner than later,” Rodriguez said on his weekly radio show.
Rodriguez addressed his team and let it be known that if it doesn’t bother them the way they played against Kansas then they aren’t who he believed they were. But it’s time to put that behind them and move onto the next matchup against a difficult Utah club at home.
The key is to address mistakes and make adjustments but remain focused on what the Mountaineers can actually execute on the field.
And while the first tendency might be to change the whole process of what they’re doing because it didn’t work, the opposite is exactly the truth.
That doesn’t mean you can’t change a play or method as well as mixing up practice in some phases, but you must stick to the same preparation process.
“The process of getting your guys ready you double down on it if anything else you don’t abandon it,” Rodriguez said.
It was a formula that Rodriguez used well last season when Jacksonville State started 0-3 and was able to turn their season around and win the Conference USA. And it comes with that experience.
“I’ve got enough years of experience I know what it’s supposed to look like. It will get there eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later,” he said.
