Tracking former Mountaineers ahead of NFL roster cutdown day

The final week of NFL preseason has arrived, meaning teams must reduce their roster to an initial 53 players by Tuesday, August 26, at 4 p.m. PT. Multiple former Mountaineers are locks and on the fence to make their respective teams.
Zach Frazier, C
Frazier completed his rookie season with 15 starts with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. He saw issues with errant snaps last season, but still managed to make the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team. He will now snap to Aaron Rodgers.
Geno Smith, QB
Smith began his tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders after he was traded from the Seahawks on March 13. He spent five seasons in Seattle, three of which were as the starting quarterback.
Colton McKivitz, RT
As the presumed San Francisco 49ers starting right tackle, McKiviz begins his sixth season. Last season, he saw 1,062 snaps played, only allowing two sacks. He anchors the right side of the line with Trent Williams protecting Brock Purdy’s blindside.
Wyatt Milum, LG
Wyatt Milum should be considered a lock as the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the third round with the 89th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Drafted as a guard, he bounced around the offensive line in training camp, seeing time at tackle. As it stands now, he is the projected second-string left guard.
Dante Stills, DT
Third-year man Stills has made a name for himself with the Arizona Cardinals. Last season, he was second on the team with 4.5 sacks and had 3.5 in 2023. Stills should have no problem making the roster, but his role with the team is up in the air as he has mostly seen time on the second-string defense.
Beanie Bishop, CB
Bishop enters his second season with the Steelers. Pittsburgh has a more talented cornerback room with the arrival of Jalen Ramsey, which will block Bishop from seeing the field. Through two preseason games, Bishop has six solo tackles and two passes defended.
Will Grier, QB
The Dallas Cowboys will have to decide on their backup quarterback. Will Grier is in a battle with Joe Miltion for the spot. In two games, Grier is 3-8 passing for 37 yards with a rushing touchdown.
Tony Fields II, LB
Fields is entering his second season with the Los Angeles Rams, after being with the Cleveland Browns for four seasons. Through two games, he has three assisted tackles. He is listed as the third-string left inside linebacker.
Garrett Greene, WR
The former quarterback has been impressive in his switch to wide receiver. He’s brought in all five balls thrown his way, accumulating 47 yards. He’s had a solid presence on special teams, seeing two punt returns with a 15.5 yard average and a kick return for 21 yards. Greene’s chances to make the roster increased as first-round selection Jalen McMillan landed on the Injury reserve with a neck injury.
Doug Nestor, RT
After spending last season on the Steelers’ practice squad, Nestor finds himself third on the team’s depth chart. He’s played in both preseason games. Nestor will likely find himself on the practice squad again.
Fatorma Mulbah, NT
Mulbah did not see any action in the New York Jets second preseason game after bringing in one tackle in the first game. He is positioned as the fourth-string right defensive tackle on the depth chart.
Austin Brinkman, LS
Brinkman secured a job with the Houston Texans after going undrafted in the 2025 draft. He should make the roster as he is the only long snapper on the roster.
Rex Sunahara, LS
Similar to Brinkman, Sunahara is the only long snapper on the Browns roster. This will be his second season in the league.
Kole Taylor, TE
In a loaded tight end room with the Cincinnati Bengals, Kole Taylor has yet to see the field in preseason action, suggesting he will struggle finding a role in the organization.
Other notable Mountaineers in the league are Rasul Douglas, who is currently a free agent and Bryce Ford-Wheaton, who suffered a torn Achilles in July with the New York Giants.
In this article, all depth chart information came from ESPN.
