West Virginia and the latest transfer portal window

The one-time 30-day transfer portal window for Designated Student Athletes is now open.
But what does it mean for West Virginia and what effect could it have on the upcoming season?
The window will remain open until Aug. 5 allowing one final chance for athletes to enter the transfer portal due to a waiver. The window is set for Designated-Student-Athletes which is a player who was grandfathered in and is exempt from roster limits.
For an athlete to enter this one-time-only portal, they must have been removed from the school’s 2025-26 roster due to new roster limits, were an eligible member of a program in 2024-25 and were recruited and assured by a school of a 2025-26 roster spot.
To enter the portal an athlete must earn the DSA designation and be placed on the DSA list by their respective schools. Once athletes earn that designation it remains with them throughout their entire career while classifying a player in that category is up to the individual schools.
The expectation from power four programs is that there won’t be any impact transfers with the bulk expected to be walk-on types or depth pieces according to Pete Nakos.
That’s good news for a West Virginia football team that has been looking to rebuild itself throughout the course of the off-season.
West Virginia has already experienced plenty of change throughout the course of the off-season with a first wave of players exiting when the coaching change occurred in December and then once again after spring practice with a wave of others departing in that portal window.
However, this window isn’t expected to mean massive changes for power four programs and for a West Virginia football team looking for stability. That’s a good thing.
