West Virginia offense challenging to defend

The West Virginia offense isn’t overly complicated – at least from the offensive perspective.
“For us it is. For the defense it’s not. And that’s the beauty of it,” offensive line coach Jack Bicknell said.
The center is key for the offense as they’re required to set some things and manage protections, but the scheme is built to allow players to play fast. That’s because the Mountaineers offensive line is not required to make all kinds of different calls at the line of scrimmage.
“Balls already snapped,” Bicknell said.
The focus is on cross-training various players at different positions on the offensive front in order to prepare them to be able to handle different roles if those situations arise.
Bicknell is excited about the group overall and believes that some of the things that are being done wrong can be fixed and it’s a natural progression over time. Bicknell is in his 40th year working with the offensive line at some level and isn’t concerned about their current progress.
Bicknell remembers as a young coach studying West Virginia when Rich Rodriguez was here the first time to see what they were doing.
“We all know when they were just running up and down the field against everybody and I can remember the days when I didn’t even know what the heck a zone read was or what that quarterback was doing,” Bicknell said.
That is obviously different now but is a testament to the staying power of the offense.
“He’s been doing it a long time and just had a lot of success. So we’re going to keep that going,” Bicknell said.
