West Virginia to expand athletic scholarships as part of Board-approved plan

West Virginia University officially announced plans to add 140 new athletic scholarships starting with the 2026-27 academic year, marking a major investment in the future of Mountaineer Athletics.
The increase will boost WVU’s total from 260 to 400 scholarships across its 18 varsity sports, with a significant rise in football scholarships and 124 additional scholarships in Olympic sports.
The move stems from a Board of Governors resolution passed unanimously in September, directing the athletic department to develop a financial plan that places WVU among the top-funded programs in the Big 12 while supporting the University’s academic mission.
Athletic director Wren Baker credited President Michael T. Benson and the Board of Governors for their backing of the initiative, calling it “a crucial step to making WVU Athletics stronger.”
The change also aligns with the House v. NCAA settlement, which transitions scholarship limits to roster sizes and ties scholarship distribution to future revenue sharing. WVU is already at full revenue share this year and will be again in 2026-27.
Statement from Wren Baker
“When our athletic teams win, WVU wins and West Virginians swell with pride. We have an obligation to help strengthen the University while advancing its mission and integrity,” Baker said. “I want to thank President Benson and our tremendous Board of Governors. Under their leadership, we have been given a path that will help us compete in the Big 12 and strengthen our position on the national level.
“The addition of 140 scholarships is a crucial step to making WVU Athletics stronger,” Baker added. “We are thankful for the confidence shown by President Benson and the BOG.”
