West Virginia head coach Ross Hodge met with the media alongside Brenen Lorient, Honor Huff, and Jasper Floyd at Big 12 Basketball Media Days, offering a look into how the Mountaineers are shaping their identity under new leadership.

Building through people, not just talent

In his first season leading the program, Hodge emphasized that his foundation starts with defense and character. Known as a defensive-minded coach, he said his staff approached roster construction in the transfer portal with urgency but care.

“You want to have a certain level of urgency, but you certainly want to do your due diligence. Character matters. People still matter. You win with people,” Hodge said.

He pointed to several newcomers who embody that mindset. Treysen Eaglestaff was described as a prolific scorer, learning to be more efficient, while Chance Moore brings versatility and size on the wing. Hodge also praised Jackson Fields for his leadership and experience, noting that each addition came from a program that had won before.

Floyd and Lorient follow Hodge’s lead

Both Jasper Floyd and Brenen Lorient transferred from North Texas to rejoin Hodge in Morgantown, citing shared values and belief in his system.

Floyd called it a “no-brainer,” explaining that faith and defense played a key role in his decision.
“He’s a follower of Christ, as I am,” Floyd said. “He’s defensive-first, and that’s how I see myself.”

Lorient added that Hodge’s trust in his players’ character made it easy to make the move again. “He’s a great guy. I’m a defensive guy myself, and he really puts a lot of trust in his players,” he said.

Huff’s impact and guard chemistry

Guard Honor Huff broke down one of his plays during the session, describing how he uses spin moves and instincts to create space when defenders overplay him. He also highlighted the team’s growing chemistry with fellow guards Treysen Eaglestaff and Floyd.

“We go as Jasper goes,” Huff said. “He runs the show. Me and Trey have a gravitational pull that opens things up for everyone else.

A new direction in Morgantown

For Hodge, it’s about blending defense, efficiency, and unselfishness to form a team that reflects his vision. The players echoed that message, showing confidence that the program’s reset will be defined by accountability and connection.

“We wanted to get people who love basketball and love other people,” Hodge said. “That combination usually allows you to have some success.”
