JJ Wetherholt made a little more WVU history Saturday, suiting up for the National League in the MLB All-Star Futures Game at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Batting leadoff, Wetherholt wasted no time, smoking an opposite-field double to left in his first at-bat to start the bottom of the first inning. That unofficially pushed his hitting streak to five games. He finished the day 1-for-4, starting as the DH before moving over to second base in the sixth.

National League manager Chipper Jones was high on the former Mountaineer. “This kid’s a player,” Jones said. “I think you’re going to see him starting in St. Louis pretty soon.”

Yonder Alonso, working the broadcast, also praised Wetherholt’s swing mechanics and pitch recognition.

Wetherholt, who hit .300 with seven homers in Double-A this season, was recently promoted to Triple-A and homered in his first game there. He’s currently the Cardinals’ top prospect and ranks No. 19 overall in all of Minor League Baseball per MLB Pipeline.

He joins Victor Scott II as the only players in West Virginia baseball history to appear in the Futures Game.
