Colorado head coach Deion Sanders met with reporters this week to preview Saturday’s matchup against West Virginia. The Buffaloes enter the game at 3-6 overall and 1-5 in Big 12 play, while the Mountaineers look to build on last week’s momentum.

Respect for Rich Rodriguez and WVU’s style of play

Sanders opened by praising West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez and the program’s toughness.

“West Virginia, tough team, been fighting back, started out rough,” Sanders said. “Now they’re playing the type of ball their coach is desiring them to play. Coach Rodriguez is a coaching legend. I respect the heck out of him.”

He said he’s long admired Rodriguez’s career and the edge his teams play with. “I love the passion and tenacity and mental and physical toughness that he coaches with,” Sanders said.

On West Virginia’s progress and freshman quarterback

Sanders credited the Mountaineers for finding their rhythm as the season has gone on. “They shook up, not the world, but the college football, the Big 12, with the win last week,” he said.

He also mentioned the strong play of true freshman quarterback Scotty Fox, who continues to lead the WVU offense. “They got a freshman that did some wonderful things a week ago,” Sanders said. “He made some key decisions and key plays in certain situations.”

Expecting a physical, disciplined challenge

When asked what stands out most about West Virginia on film, Sanders pointed to a team that plays together and competes with effort across the board. “I saw a team effort, not just a singular guy’s effort,” he said. “They did some good things for him and with him to stay in his comfort zone.”

Sanders noted that discipline will play a major role in the outcome, calling the Mountaineers a fundamentally sound team that takes advantage of opponents’ mistakes.

Preparation for an early kickoff

Saturday’s matchup in Morgantown will be Colorado’s first trip east this season, but Sanders said the timing aligns well with his team’s normal schedule. “We practice at nine, so I think that’s 10 East Coast,” he said. “We perform better in the morning because that’s when we normally get up and get after it.”

West Virginia hosts Colorado on Saturday at noon ET on TNT, Tru, and HBO Max.
