What Kyle Whittingham said about Utah, West Virginia

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham spoke to the media today to discuss the loss to Texas Tech and quickly shifted the focus to this week’s matchup with West Virginia.
Breaking down Texas Tech loss
Whittingham didn’t mince words about what went wrong in the 34-10 setback, pointing to four turnovers, struggles running and throwing the ball, and poor tackling with 23 misses. He also admitted the Utes ran too laterally in the ground game and need to get more downhill.
“We’ve got to be better finishers than we were on Saturday,” Whittingham said, noting that while the defense held up under difficult field position, the offense never found rhythm.
Moving forward with confidence
Despite the disappointment, Whittingham stressed confidence in his team’s leadership and ability to rebound, crediting a “24-hour rule” approach to move forward.
Now the attention turns to Morgantown, where Utah will face Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia. Whittingham called Rodriguez “an excellent football coach” and praised his offensive schemes. He also expects a difficult road test in a new environment.
“I’ve never been to Morgantown, but I understand it’s a great place to play. They get great crowds,” Whittingham said. “They’ll be fired up, and they’re coming off a loss like us. When you’re coming off a loss, you’re hungry. We’re gonna get their best shot.”
Facing a hungry Mountaineer team
He also noted the Mountaineers unsettled quarterback situation after playing three signal callers against Kansas, as well as the absence of top running back Tye Edwards. Still, Whittingham expects WVU to present challenges with its high-pressure defense and Rodriguez’s offensive creativity.
“We know what he brings to the table offensively, and we’re gonna have our hands full,” Whittingham said.
