WR Jaden Bray embracing role in new offense
West Virginia had a lot of roster turnover in the offseason, but one pass catcher that remained with the program was Jaden Bray.
Bray transferred into the football program the previous year from Oklahoma State and was expected to make an immediate impact in the room. But due to a lower leg injury, Bray was limited to just 116 snaps on the season before sitting out the remainder of the year after the matchup against his former team.
He finished last season with 2 catches for 88 yards, but with a new coaching staff in town and a fresh bill of health, opportunity is available in the wide receiver room.
Bray bounces back from injury with strong offseason
And Bray put together a strong spring followed by a productive fall camp.
“I’ve been really impressed. He’s a really hard worker,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said.
To add to that, the Mountaineers provide GPS tracking vests that the players wear in practice in order to track their explosiveness, speed, and yards traveled on a daily basis. And Bray has tested well there.
“He is either one, two or three after practice with the amount of volume he does. So, he’s playing a position that gets a lot of yards, playing outside receiver, but he works really hard. And he’s a physical guy,” Rodriguez said.
Work ethic and versatility stand out in receiver room
And that’s important because the Mountaineers want their outside wide receivers to stretch the field and play the game with a physical element when it comes to perimeter blocking.
On top of that, Bray also has shown the ability to pick up on the offense, which could put him in a great spot to carve out a bigger role in a wide-open receiver room.
“I think he’s going to be poised for a really good year,” Rodriguez said.
