West Virginia head baseball coach Steve Sabins said he’s encouraged by what he saw from his team through fall practices, capped by 18 innings of exhibition play at Wake Forest.

Productive fall capped by strong showing

The Mountaineers closed team practice with a 5–2 win in the first of two scrimmages at Wake Forest, showing clear progress on the mound and at the plate. Sabins said Chase Meyer, Dawson Montesa, Wyatt Mosley, and Chansen Cole all impressed, while Gavin Kelly, Matthew Graveline, and Sean Smith powered the offense early.

Technology taking center stage

Sabins highlighted WVU’s use of motion-capture analysis in the new Indoor Performance Center, saying the staff now evaluates players’ body mechanics throughout the semester. “It’s here to stay,” Sabins said. “We’re doing it earlier than a lot of people.”

Key performers emerging

Sabins praised Graveline, “he was our best offensive player this fall, bar none,” and called Kelly “a budding superstar” capable of playing multiple positions. Freshmen Weston Mazey and Weston Smith also stood out, Mazey for his on-base consistency and maturity, and Smith for touching 95 mph in his final outing.

Looking ahead

WVU enters the winter development period focused on fine-tuning individual plans before spring. With Sabins’ emphasis on depth, analytics, and adaptability, the Mountaineers appear positioned for another competitive year in the Big 12.
