WVU football schedule updated after Alabama series canceled

West Virginia and Alabama have mutually agreed to cancel their two-game football series that was scheduled for 2026 and 2027.
The Crimson Tide were slated to visit Milan Puskar Stadium on Sept. 5, 2026, while the Mountaineers were set to travel to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 4, 2027.
The cancellation allows WVU to reshape its future nonconference schedule to follow the current trend in college football. The approach now favored by most Power 4 programs is to schedule one Power opponent, one Group of Six opponent, and one FCS opponent.
WVU has been among the few Power programs to play multiple Power nonconference opponents in recent years, doing so each of the last seven seasons. This change brings the Mountaineers more in line with peers, while also giving fans an added benefit: a seventh home game in 2027.
“This scheduling philosophy has proven to be successful across college football. It aligns our football program with its competition in terms of potential postseason opportunities and advancement,” athletic director Wren Baker said. “I am also aware of the importance of a seventh home game in 2027 for our fans and the huge economic impact it brings to our state, city and tourism division. Visitors coming to West Virginia are not only critical for state tourism, but also to our local economy.”
Replacing Alabama on the schedule, the Mountaineers will now host Coastal Carolina on Sept. 5, 2026, and Southern Miss on Sept. 4, 2027. WVU and Coastal Carolina last met in 2010, with the Mountaineers winning the only matchup between the schools. The 2027 game will mark the first meeting between WVU and Southern Miss.
