WVU routs Coppin State 91-49 behind Moore's 17 points

West Virginia improved to 7-2 after defeating Coppin State 91-49 at the Hope Coliseum on Monday. This is the second consecutive game WVU held its opponent to under 50 points.

Guards Chance Moore and Honor Huff led the Mountaineers with 17 points each. Moore added four rebounds and two blocks, while Huff drilled five three-pointers.

WVU saw 42 bench points as Moore was the leading scorer, forward Jackson Fields totaled nine points and guard Amir Jenkins added eight.

After Forward Brenen Lorient converted a layup on the Mountaineers’ first possession, Coppin State scored nine unanswered points before Ross Hodge used a timeout. Out of the break, Moore made a layup, setting the score at 9-4 at the first media timeout.

After the media timeout, Moore made two free throws, and forward Treysen Eaglestaff drilled a three-pointer. A minute later, Coppin State Head Coach Larry Stewart was ejected after two technical fouls for arguing a blocked shot from center Harlan Obiohia.

Huff was sent to the line for four free throws and only converted one, bringing the score to 11-10.

After Huff’s free throw, momentum shifted towards the Mountaineers as they saw a 16-5 run before a Coppin State timeout. The run was backed behind seven points from Moore, while Eaglestaff and Lorient added a three-pointer each.

WVU led 26-15.

Coppin State ended the run with two layups from DeMariontay Hall and Chris Morgan before Fields saw his first game points with a dunk and layup the following possession.

The Mountaineers added 10 more points before half. Huff put in three shots from beyond the arc, and Obioha made a free throw.

At halftime, WVU led 40-32.

Out of the break, WVU opened with an 11-2 run. Lorient made a layup off a turnover, and Hassan Perkins responded with a jumper. Obioha converted a layup, Huff knocked down a three, Lorient saw another layup and Jenkins flew under the rim for a reverse layup in transition before a media timeout.

WVU extended its lead to 51-34.

Another large scoring stretch from the Mountainers put the game out of reach, where they saw 25 points in just under 8 and a half minutes. Forward DJ Thomas started the run with two layups, and a few possessions later, guard Jasper Floyd sank a floater.

Moore slammed in a dunk after driving the baseline before a Lorient three. Moore got a layup after Jenkins offensive rebound. Fields drilled a mid-range jumpshot, then Huff nailed his fifth three of the game. WVU hit seven free throws in the stretch.

WVU saw its lead jump to 76-47.

After taking control, WVU cruised to a 91-49 victory.
