Softball America Stars of the Week: Harp, Chaffin, Shumaker, Tinsley

The Softball America staff will pick four student-athletes as our Stars of the Week following the latest slate of games. Our award system isn’t necessarily stat-based but rather players who left a lasting impact as we watched games from the previous week. Who changed the tune of their teams? Who made the headlines? Who might be the breakout star during the season?
Kennedy Harp, OF, Florida State
It’s not easy to outshine Jaysoni Beachum and Isa Torres, yet that’s what Harp did this past weekend. The sophomore outfielder won the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge MVP after batting .667 with two doubles, three triples and a home run.
Raelin Chaffin, RHP, Mississippi State
Chaffin started her Mississippi State career by beating NiJaree Canady and Texas Tech in an eight-inning battle. The LSU transfer also finished the weekend with four wins after shutting out Penn State and Nebraska. She allowed 12 hits and struck out 20 batters over 22.2 innings.

Taylor Shumaker, OF, Florida
The Florida outfield somehow got stronger over the offseason. Shumaker belted five home runs in six games and is tied for the most in the country. The freshman went 9-for-18 (.500) at the plate with seven of those nine hits going for extra bases during opening weekend.
Taylor Tinsley, RHP, UCLA
Tinsley and the UCLA pitching staff shined all weekend with Kaitlyn Terry and five-star freshman Addisen Fisher. Tinsley threw seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out 18. In her five-inning outing against IU Indianapolis, she struck out 14 batters throwing 54 strikes and just seven balls.
