Talons 8, Bandits 7

The Talons continued to roll on Friday, walking off the Bandits in extras, 8-7. The win also solidifies the Talons’ firm control of first place in the AUSL standings.

The first five runs of the game all came from the Talons off of Bandits starter Taylor McQuillan. Sharlize Palacios lifted a sacrifice fly to score the first run in the second inning. Then, home runs from Jadelyn Allchin and Hannah Flippen scored three more in the third. Caroline Jacobsen added on in the fourth, also belting a homer to extend the Talons’ lead to 5-0 after four full innings.

Talons starter Georgina Corrick tossed four scoreless innings, but was clobbered in the fifth. The Bandits poured on six runs, ultimately taking the lead. Morgan Zerkle’s RBI double kick-started the big inning. Erin Coffel laced a two-run single to keep it going and Bubba Nickles-Camarena mashed a three-run homer to put the Bandits up 6-5 after five.

Taking a one-run Bandits lead into the seventh, Talons rookie Sierra Sacco tied the game with a solo home run.

New to the Bandits, Danielle Gibson-Whorton gave her team an 8-7 lead with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Unfortunately for the Bandits, the Talons responded with two runs in the home half. Victoria Hayward’s game-tying single and Ali Aguilar’s walk-off double sealed the win.

Volts 11, Blaze 6

Following the Talons’ win, the Volts closed the gap in the AUSL standings after outscoring the Blaze 11-6 on Friday night.

The offensive onslaught began in the opening frame when the Blaze ambushed Volts starter Rachel Garcia for four runs. Kayla Kowalik drew a bases-loaded walk and Ali Newland delivered a three-run double to put the Blaze up big early.

Unfortunately for the Blaze, the Volts started to get to rookie Emma Lemley in the next few innings. In the second, Ciara Briggs singled to cut the deficit to three. Then, Mia Scott launched a two-run homer in the third and Lemley failed to get out of the fourth unscathed.

Dejah Mulipola tied the game with an RBI double and Briggs drove in her second run of the game with a single, officially chasing Lemley from the game. The runs kept coming for the Volts against reliever Aleshia Ocasio. Sierra Romero socked a run-scoring double, Tiare Jennings hit an RBI single and Jessica Warren cleared the bases with a three-run double. After four innings and a Blaze pitching change, the Volts led 10-4.

The Blaze didn’t go down without a fight though, driving in two runs in the fifth. Baylee Klingler’s double and Kowalik’s second RBI of the game prompted a Volts pitching change. On in relief, Payton Gottshall dazzled, tossing three shutout innings.

The Volts padded their lead with an insurance run from Sis Bates’ RBI single and eventually claimed a shootout win over the Blaze. Following the win, the Volts now stand four games behind the second-place Bandits in the AUSL standings.
