2025 MLB Draft: Minnesota Twins select Alabama RHP Riley Quick

Alabama pitcher Riley Quick was chosen in the first round of the 2025 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Sunday, taken 36th overall by the Minnesota Twins.

With his selection, Quick becomes the sixth first-rounder in Alabama history. Quick now also stands as the second consecutive first-round arm produced by the Crimson Tide, joining Ben Hess, who was chosen 26th overall by the New York Yankees in 2024. The Alabama native is now the second-highest pitcher drafted in program history, trailing only Hess.

Pitcher, R-Sophomore

  • An imposing presence on the mound with an electric array of pitches
  • Earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Southeast Region Second Team honors following his redshirt-sophomore campaign
  • Named a Second Team All-SEC selection as a starting pitcher in 2025
  • Appeared in 31 games over three seasons, including 15 starts
  • Owns a 10-4 record with a 3.72 ERA (36 ER/87.0 IP) and 101 strikeouts compared to 46 walks
  • Made 14 starts during the 2025 season, producing a 3.92 ERA (27 ER/62.0 IP) with 70 punchouts
  • Underwent season-ending elbow surgery following his start against Manhattan on Feb. 17, 2024
  • Went 1-1 with two saves and 3.68 ERA (9 ER/22.0 IP) across 16 appearances in 2023
  • Added 26 strikeouts with a .244 average against in his rookie campaign
  • Tossed 3.2 scoreless innings against Auburn on April 16 for his first career win, allowing two hits and a pair of walks to go with two strikeouts
  • A two-time SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll selection (2024-25) as well as an SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll recipient (2022-23)

Alabama in the MLB Draft

  • Riley Quick is the sixth first-rounder in Alabama history, joining Joe Vitiello (7th), Ben Hess (26th), Taylor Tankersley (27th), Jeremy Brown (35th) and Tommy Hunter (54th)
  • Quick becomes the second-highest pitcher selected in the MLB Draft in program history
  • The Trussville native is the eighth player selected by the Twins out of Alabama, and the first since Garrett McMillan in 2019 (19th round)
  • With Hess’ selection, the Crimson Tide’s all-time draft pick total moved to 177 (166 players) since the event’s inception in 1966
  • Alabama has had at least one player drafted for 47 consecutive years, dating back to 1979
  • The Tide has had one or more players selected in 54 of the 60 MLB Drafts overall
  • UA has seen 66 players selected in the last 15 years, with one more day remaining in this year’s draft
  • Entering the final day of the MLB Draft, a total of 101 players have been taken out of the University of Alabama in the last 25 drafts dating back to 2000
  • Excluding the abbreviated 2020 MLB Draft, Alabama has had 17 pitchers taken in the last seven drafts, including six in the top-five rounds
