Alabama DL suffers injury in practice, expected to miss rest of season

Another Alabama defensive lineman has suffered an injury in practice.

Jeremiah Beaman, who started last week’s season opener at Florida State, sustained a knee injury during Wednesday’s ULM week practice, sources confirmed to BamaOnLine. Beaman, a redshirt freshman, started Week 1 in place of injured veteran DL Tim Keenan (ankle). 

Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer said Beaman is expected to miss the rest of the season.

“We unfortunately had an injury this morning in practice,” DeBoer said on his weekly radio show. “Jeremiah Beaman suffered a lower-body injury, and right now, we’re expecting him to probably be out for the year. Really unfortunate for a guy like that.

“It’s a fine line. You’re going hard, and these guys are practicing. You’re trying to go good vs. good, you’re trying to play the speed of the game. The same thing happened with Tim. It’s innocent stuff. It’s physical, it’s football, and in the trenches down there, legs get tangled up and stuff. Neither one of those injuries, nobody’s at fault.”

Beaman played a career-high 21 snaps in the first game against the Seminoles, according to Pro Football Focus. He registered one quarterback hurry in the Crimson Tide’s 31-17 loss.

With Keenan out and Beaman now injured, as well, Alabama will likely lean on Edric Hill, Isaia Faga and freshman London Simmons in the interior of its line behind starter James Smith.

“It’s the same guys that were out there on Saturday, just more reps for them,” DeBoer said. “So Edric’s got to step up and continue to play. James has got to step up. I mean, our two young freshmen that were out there gotta group up fast, and that happened on Saturday. 

“They had to grow up fast, and made some mistakes and some things that we all can do better. That happens more and more, especially as a younger player. So, they’re gonna get their opportunities, and I know they’ll make the most of them.”

Earlier on Wednesday, DeBoer provided a positive update on Keenan, who could return to action next week when Alabama welcomes the Wisconsin Badgers to Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“Tim Keenan will not be available this week, but he’s doing really well and making the progress that we would expect,” DeBoer said. “This is not a long-term injury for him.”

In Week 2, Alabama will play host to ULM on September 6 (6:45 p.m. on SEC Network).
