Alabama announced its team captains for the 2025 football season on Thursday.

After the Crimson Tide’s 18th practice of the preseason, the four players who had been voted permanent captains by their teammates were revealed by Yea Alabama. They were linebacker Deontae Lawson, offensive lineman Parker Brailsford, defensive lineman Tim Keenan and quarterback Ty Simpson. Lawson was voted a captain of Alabama’s 2024 team.

This marks the seventh year in a row that a Crimson Tide quarterback has been voted a team captain. Simpson joins Jalen Milroe (2023-24), Bryce Young (2021-22), Mac Jones (2020) and Tua Tagovailoa (2019) in being recognized as a leader by his fellow UA players.

This is the second year in a row that captains were announced before the season. During Nick Saban’s tenure, players voted on captains after the regular season, and they were announced at the team’s awards banquet after the SEC Championship Game. But now, it occurs before the season kicks off. Last August, Kalen Deboer explained why he takes this approach.

“I think there’s levels to the leadership,” DeBoer said. “We need every guy. I tell them, if they have influence on anyone, they’re a leader, which is pretty much our whole team. These guys are the ones that, for the most part, are the best of the best.

“… We have a unity council, which is another level and layer of the leadership. Then the captains. That’s kind of how it has always felt. There is just this smaller group you really can go to, that you feel certainly have the ears of the team and can get up in front of them.”

In addition to being leaders, Alabama’s captains participate in the coin toss before games. They are celebrated on the UA campus, as every spring, their hand and cleat prints are immortalized in cement in the shadow of Denny Chimes, along with all the past Crimson Tide captains.
