Washington assistant coach expected to join Alabama defensive staff

Head coach Kalen DeBoer has seemingly filled out his on-field coaching staff at Alabama.
Barring something unforeseen, DeBoer is expected to add William Inge to his defensive staff in Tuscaloosa, BamaOnLine has reported. Inge spent the last four years on DeBoer’s staff, serving as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Washington from 2022-23 and then the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Fresno State from 2020-21.
Inge spent the last two years in Seattle where he split defensive coordinator responsibilities with Chuck Morrell, UW’s safeties coach. Inge guided a Huskies linebacker group that was led by Edefuan Ulofoshio, who finished the 2023 season as a first-team All-Pac-12 honoree from the league’s coaches and was second on the team in tackles with 94. Inge’s linebackers in 2022 – Cam Bright and Alphonzo Tuputala – earned honorable mention All-Pac-12.
In his two seasons at Fresno State, the Bulldogs’ defense went from 82nd nationally in scoring defense and 88th in total defense to No. 20 and No. 31 in the FBS, respectively, in 2021. Fresno State allowed 20.5 points and 347.1 yards per game during the 2021 season and saw five of its defensive players earn some level of All-Mountain West Conference honors.
Inge was on the same Indiana staff as DeBoer and new Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack in 2019. He was the special teams coordinator under head coach Tom Allen. During those two seasons kicker Logan Justus was named a Lou Groza Award semifinalist and punter Haydon Whitehead was a three-time Ray Guy Award candidate (2017-19).
Inge also coached linebackers at Indiana from 2013-17, and that is a position group he has worked with at several stops, including Buffalo (2010-11), Cincinnati (2008-09), San Diego State (2006-07) and Northern Iowa (2001-02). In his time at Buffalo, he mentored Khalil Mack. He was also a defensive line assistant for the Buffalo Bills for one season in 2012.

Inge is the fifth and final defensive coach set to join DeBoer’s Alabama staff. Tide defensive line coach Freddie Roach was retained by the new coach, while Wommack was added as defensive coordinator, Maurice Linguist will serve as the co-defensive coordinator and Colin Hitschler was brought in as an assistant. Linguist and Hitschler will split the secondary.
FootballScoop reported on Monday night that Inge is expected to work with linebackers. It will be interesting to see what happens with Wommack announcing he will coach that group.
